Hot Cross buns are synonymous with Easter and there are a few old and  interesting superstitions surrounding these sweet buns.

English folklore includes many superstitions surrounding hot cross buns. One of them says that buns baked and served on Good Friday will not spoil or become mouldy during the subsequent year. Another encourages keeping such a bun for medicinal purposes. A piece of it given to someone who is ill is said to help them recover.

Sharing a hot cross bun with another is supposed to ensure friendship throughout the coming year, particularly if “Half for you and half for me, Between us two shall goodwill be” is said at the time. Because of the cross on the buns, some say they should be kissed before being eaten.

If taken on a sea voyage, hot cross buns are said to protect against shipwreck.

If hung in the kitchen, they are said to protect against fires and ensure that all breads turn out perfectly. The hanging bun is replaced each year

The Atkins diet which was extremely popular in the mid nineties has a new version.

The Atkins Nutritional Approach gained widespread popularity in 2003 and 2004. At the height of its popularity one in eleven North-American adults were on the diet.

According to blogger Seth Rotherham , the original Atkins Diet, which basically eliminates carbohydrates, was first developed in the 1970’s. About Robert Atkins

In 2003, Robert Atkins died from a fatal head injury sustained in a fall on ice.

His death came after a battle with a heart condition, cardiomyopathy, reportedly caused by a viral infection, which had caused noticeable weight fluctuation in his final years. This combination of circumstances led to rumours and allegations that Dr. Atkins had died from complications arising from his namesake nutritional plan. However contemporary accounts from his physicians did not substantiate these rumours.

Nevertheless the reputation of the nutritional plan, and the low-carbohydrate concept in general, suffered.

Usual household items have sometimes interesting but very useful alternative uses. Recently Realsimple Magazine did a poll to determine the favourite double duty household items of all time.

Here are the favourite double duty house hold items:

Toothpick as Marker for Clear Packing Tape


Original purpose: Spearing hors d’oeuvres.

Aha! use: Marking a roll of clear packing tape. After each use, place a toothpick under the loose end. The next time you have something to seal, pick up where you left off.

Reward: Tape and fingernails that aren’t picked to shreds.

Tissue Box as Grocery Bag Holder


Original purpose: Helping you through a weepie movie.
Aha! use:
Storing plastic grocery bags under the kitchen sink. After An Affair to Remember has exhausted your supply of tissues, stuff the bags into the empty box.
Reward: Restored order in your cabinets and bags ready for reuse.

Spaghetti as Candle-Lighter

Original purpose: Hooking up with marinara.

Aha! use: Lighting multiple candles. If you don’t have extra-long matches on hand, try a piece of spaghetti.

Reward: No toasted fingers.

Your preference in wine (and other tastes) can reveal aspects of your personality. This is according to recent research which for instance found that a preference for sweet wine was linked to a higher level of impulsiveness.

Scientists say your preference for sweet or salty tastes could also reveal an aspect of your personality.

Their results revealed that a preference for sweet wine was linked to a higher level of impulsiveness and a lower level of openness compared with a preference for dry white wine.

The researchers observed that people who prefer dry wine may be less likely to consume high-sugar products and their greater openness tends to result in a healthier diet.

However, with regard to other personality traits, there was not a significant difference in reported levels of risk-taking, empathy, extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness and neuroticism.

You are probably bored with your home cooked meals, and would like to visit a restaurant for a change. On the other hand, your doctor has advised you not to eat restaurant foods as it can result in weight gain. You simply don’t know which way to go, right?

Here is an  article that will tell you how to enjoy restaurant foods while at the same time making sure that you don’t get any fatter!

Here is a rule of thumb for you: if a certain food tastes too good, it means it has been richly fried, and as such, not good for your health. Surprisingly enough, the raw vegetables and fruits, which usually taste awful, are the best foods for quick weight loss!

1. Visit vegetarian restaurants: In order to be on the safe side, visit restaurants which offer only vegetarian meals. This is not to say that non-veg meals are bad. With non-veg restaurants, you have to take extra care to make sure that you are not eating high-calorie or high-fat foods.

As an example, ordinary chicken meat which is served in most restaurants is usually laden with huge amounts of fat which is bad for you! Lean chicken meat, on the other hand, is good for you, but not all restaurants offer lean chicken meat as part of their menus. With vegetarian restaurants, you will be more often than not on the safe side!

2. Let the salad dressing go: You have heard it a zillion times that salads are good for quick weight loss. The reason behind this is that salads are nothing but raw vegetables in chopped form. Raw vegetables, as you might be aware, help you burn fat by boosting your metabolic rate. However, the salad dressing that is provided in most restaurants is rich in calorie. So whenever you ask for salads, make sure to instruct them to remove the salad dressing from the top!

3. Stay away from buffets: A lot of the foods you see at buffets are rich in calorie content. These foods are cooked in bulk with a large amount of oil, thereby making them unsuitable for those who are looking forward to shedding some pounds. If you really want to eat from buffets, make sure you steer clear of these fatty foods and choose the salads and other healthier alternatives instead! That way, you won’t accumulate an excessive amount of fat in your body!

4. Control your portions: Check the amount of food you are going to eat before you take that bite! If you think that the food provided to you exceed the portion control limit you are allowed, eat according to your portion limit and then carry the leftovers back home to be eaten on the next day. Ask for a box from the restaurant to help you carry the leftovers.

As long as you use your discretion, there is nothing wrong with eating at a restaurant once in while. So go ahead and appease your tastebuds!
